3 Essential Questions for Optimal Leadership
3 Essential Questions for Optimal Leadership
At some point in every team’s journey, there comes a moment when people decide whether or not to fully get behind their leader. And whether we realize it or not, we’re all asking three fundamental questions before we make that decision: Who are you? Where are you going? Can I trust you? If you’re a leader struggling to connect with your team—whether you’re in the boardroom, a classroom, or leading your local scout troop—it’s likely these questions aren’t being answered clearly enough. Here’s the truth: people won’t follow what they don’t understand. Connection doesn’t have to take forever to build, but it does require clarity, authenticity, and consistency. Let’s break these questions down.
Who are you? This isn’t about titles or resumes—it’s about values. People need to see what you stand for and trust that your actions align with those beliefs. Think back to a time when you trusted someone quickly—chances are it wasn’t because they said the right thing, but because they lived it.
Where are you going? People want to know the destination before they get on the bus. Your vision doesn’t have to be perfect, but it has to be clear enough that people can say, “Yes, I want to go there with you.” Beyond vision, they need to know you’re capable of adapting. Can you course-correct when challenges hit? Are you open to change and flexible enough to lead through it? If you don’t know where you’re going—or worse, if you’re not excited about it—don’t expect others to come along for the ride.
Can I trust you? Trust is the glue of leadership, and it starts with you. Are you authentic and willing to be vulnerable? Great leaders don’t pretend things are better (or worse) than they are—they tell the truth and face reality head-on. Trust also means showing people they’re heard and seen. Listening deeply, being present, and creating space for others is how trust grows. Here’s the bottom line: trust is built when leaders go first—showing their real selves and setting the tone.
These three questions—Who are you? Where are you going? Can I trust you?—are your compass for becoming the kind of leader people will gladly follow.
